Overview and Scope

The SLAFES series started in 1969 in Caracas, Venezuela, and over time the Symposia have taken place in 8 different latin-american countries. The last four events occurred in Mérida, Venezuela (2002), Havana, Cuba (2004), Puebla, Mexico and Puerto Iguazú, Argentina (2008). In its latest (19th) edition in Puerto Iguazú, SLAFES had about 300 participants from 16 countries. The program consisted of many plenary, invited and short talks in addition to posters sessions.

The 20th edition of SLAFES here in Brazil should have a similar format (including parallel sessions) with its traditional wide scientific scope. However, SLAFES XX should also include discussions about international cooperation and funding opportunities within Latin America. The idea is to foster/ strengthen new liaisons within the Condensed Matter Community in Latin America. We are putting together a solid program involving essentially all areas of Condensed Matter Physics.

Some Areas of Interest (theoretical and experimental)

Superconductivity, Magnetism, Semiconductors, Materials Science, etc., etc., … and all their nano/bio/spin/eco/energy state-of-the-art ramifications... More to the point: all areas of Condensed Matter Physics are of interest within SLAFES XX. Below we refer the interested prospective participant to three links of the PACS 2010 (Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme from the AIP) which clearly identify many specific subjects of interest.

  • 60Condensed Matter: Structure, Mechanical and Thermal Properties
  • 70Condensed Matter: Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic, and Optical Properties
  • 80Interdisciplinary Physics and Related Areas of Science and Technology
